Ryuzaburo Shikiba: Ventricular Reflector

2020.3.14(Sat) — 7.26(Sun) —5.17(sun) *Extended

Ryuzaburo Shikiba (1898-1965) was born in what is now Gosen City, Niigata Prefecture, and was a psychiatrist who studied at the Niigata Medical College (now Niigata University School of Medicine). In addition to his medical practice, he wrote about 200 books during his lifetime, including the Mingei movement, Van Gogh theory, an introduction to psychopathology, and sex education books. He also worked on projects such as the Van Gogh reproduction exhibition and the Kiyoshi Yamashita exhibition, leading the interest and tastes of a wide range of people. Shikiba's multidisciplinary enlightenment activities contributed to the formation of our view of art (for example, the union of ideas such as 'genius/madness', 'creation/fate', and 'art/life'). The ceremonial hall, which was widely guided by the times and led the times, gave an important context to the cultural history of modern and contemporary Japan. As a character that evaluates the unique individuality of going back and forth between the visible (science) and the invisible (art), the subtitle was taken from Shikiba's book (1939) and named "Cerebral Ventricle Reflector." We trace the various footprints through about 200 works and materials.
