Dokokade?Genbi
Daigoro Yonekura

2022.10.1(Sat) — 11.27(Sun)

Photo: Kazuhiro Uchida

As the 4th exhibition in the "Dokokade? Genbi” series at Yebiden Gallery, we will introduce a Hiroshima-based painter, Daigoro Yonekura. At first glance, the exhibited works may appear like ink paintings depicting majestic landscapes. They, however, are fictitious images created by repeatedly copying a landscape photograph taken by the artist. The photograph was copied using a black-and-white copying machine and then cut into fragments to be rearranged on the canvas. The artist explores the possible relationship between the landscape and the viewers by constructing an image that goes back and forth between ink painting and landscape photograph, that is, fiction and real.

Artist's Profile

Daigoro Yonekura

Born in Hiroshima Prefecture in 1975. In 2006, Yonekura received Ph.D. from Hiroshima City University. The artist seeks to recapture painting that does not belong to any existing categories, such as oil or ink painting. The artist’s original style gained through various experimentations and trials proposes a fundamental question of “What the painting is.” His major solo exhibitions include “more than painting, less than painting, or anything else” (hpgrp GALLERY [Tokyo], 2020) and “FOLDS of PAINT” (mm project [Hiroshima], 2017). Group exhibitions include “・ and –: Color and Shape, Shimane Art Room” (Iwami Art Museum, 2019) and “3331 ART FAIR 2019” (3331 Arts Chiyoda [Tokyo], 2019).
