Collection Exhibition 2020-Ⅱ
Collection Highlight & Special Feature: Portraits of Self and Others

2020.8.6(Thu) — 11.29(Sun)

The exhibition consists of two parts, the first entitled “Portraits of Self and Others,” and the second a Special Feature titled “Collection Highlights.”

In the first half, “Portraits of Self and Others,” we examine approaches to portraiture in contemporary art. Works depicting a particular person have been made all over the world since ancient times, and the issues raised by such works vary greatly depending on the era. In the present day, portraits, created with a diverse range of media and materials, reexamine a variety of viewpoints and consider the ambiguous identities and uncertain sense of self that we confront in the current era.
In the second half, we introduce a group of works that deal with the theme of peace as it relates to Hiroshima. As a museum located in Hiroshima, an atomic-bombed city, one of the pillars of our collection is works that expresses the relationship between this history and contemporary art. It will be interesting to see how subjects such as the disastrous events and subsequent rejuvenation of Hiroshima, and the desire for peace are manifested in the works in this exhibit, which marks the 75th anniversary of the bombing.
