Kusama Yayoi and Nostalgic Feature Phones

Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art, Former Telephone Booth

The mobile phones designed by Kusama Yayoi were released as limited-edition models under KDDI’s “iida” brand, launched in 2009. The models Dots Obsession: Full of Happiness with Dots and My Dog LinLin were each limited to 100 units, while Handbag for Going to the Universe was limited to 1,000 units. Each phone came with an edition number and the artist’s handwritten signature.
To accompany this, we’ve also put together a small collection of nostalgic Japanese feature phones (“garakei,” short for “Galápagos phones”), including flip phones, slide phones, and bar-style phones once used by museum staff.
