Work Description

After studying textile design at university, Ishiuchi embarked on a career as a photographer. She represented Japan at the Venice Biennale in 2005, where she presented Mother’s, a series of photographs of her mother’s body, taken while she was still alive, and close-ups of her belongings taken after her death. In 2007 she initiated ひろしま/hiroshima, a series of photographs of clothing and personal items of atomic bombing victims from the collection of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. As with her other series, these photographs were taken in natural light with a hand-held 35mm camera, rather than a large-format camera, and no tripod. Since the works appeared in a book and exhibition in 2008, she has continued taking these photographs as the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum’s continues to acquire similar materials.
