Work Description

Since her stunning debut with the Elevator Girls series in 1993, Yanagi has consistently produced photographic works that examine the position and mentality of women in contemporary society, in series including My Grandmothers, in which young women envision themselves 50 years hence, and Fairy Tale, featuring elderly women and young girls acting out fantastical scenes. This work, I’m Longing for Spring, takes “Hiroshima” as its theme. The girls, all longing for spring, hold brushes in their hands and use plates scattered around them as palettes, perhaps attempting to paint something on the other side of the rubble. Cherry blossom petals float on the water in which they dip their feet.
