Title
Who Began to Write Hiroshima in Katakana Characters
Artist
Yoshio KITAYAMA
Year
1996
Material
bamboo, pig skin, copper wire

Work Description

Kitayama creates lightweight three-dimensional works and installations, in which organic forms seem to be filled with air, primarily using natural materials such as bamboo, wood, and paper. The interior of this work, which the audience can enter, is free of columns and entirely supported by the elasticity of the bamboo assembled to cover its surface. Dried pigskin fastened with copper wire fills the spaces between intersecting stalks of bamboo. The artist responded to the call to create a work on the theme of “Hiroshima” with a work that “represents destruction, creation, and time,” with an eye on the state of the world today.
