Work Description

Born and raised in Hiroshima and exposed to the atomic bombing at the age of five, Irino stated that this experience underlay his own lifelong depiction of disintegration and creation. At times he used an approach in which he distorted paint on canvas by pushing or dragging so as to render a spherical object being torn apart by powerful forces, or a mass melting and flowing down, as in this work. The undulating form of the work results from a phenomenon that cannot, in itself, be controlled by human will alone. According to the artist, the “flux” in the title refers to the entirety of creation.
