Work Description

Known for iron sculptures, Wakabayashi engaged in deep and ongoing contemplation of how humans should engage with nature, while embracing the properties of iron that cause it to corrode in its natural state. Taking an interest in the Atomic Bomb Dome in Hiroshima, the iron part of which was exposed by the blast, the artist created a huge iron dome and then burned its surface, reflecting the changes that the Atomic Bomb Dome has undergone over many years: oxidation of the iron, which was drastically accelerated by intense heat rays, and corrosion that continues to progress today.
