Work Description

Born in Osaka, Usami moved to Tokyo after graduating from high school, but did not go on to university and instead studied painting on his own. He debuted with a solo exhibition at Tokyo’s Minami Gallery, which specialized in contemporary art, at the age of 23. The artist subsequently participated in numerous exhibitions in Japan and abroad, including the 1972 Venice Biennale. He also taught at Tama Art University and Kyoto City University of Arts, and produced many writings that document his extraordinary philosophical explorations. The human figures visible in this painting reference a 1965 photograph in a Time magazine article about an African-American uprising, and the same image continually recurred in his works until the end of his life.
