Work Description

Yoga (Western-style) painter Toshi’s delicate renderings of the human body are dramatically fused with Japanese-style painter Iri’s bold ink painting technique. The couple, who visited Hiroshima soon after the atomic bombing out of concern for family members, collaborated on The Hiroshima Panels from 1950 to 1982, eloquently conveying the devastation of the atomic bombing. This work brings together, at a larger scale, various motifs from the early Hiroshima Panels series, including rainbows, mothers and children, cattle, and a child in an anti-air raid hood . Before it entered this museum’s collection, it was on permanent view at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum.
