Work Description

After making a spectacular art world debut at the young age of 22, Tateishi suddenly departed Japan in 1969 and relocated to Milan. His discomfort with settling in one place is reflected not only in the way he freely traversed multiple genres in his artistic practice, including manga, painting, illustration, picture books, scrolls, hanging scrolls, and ceramics, but also from his name changes, from Koichi Tateishi to Tiger Tateishi in 1968, after which he changed the Japanese transliteration of “Tiger” from katakana to kanji in 1990. His paintings of the 1960s dealt with various events and ideas of the time, from Westerns and other American movies and the films of Akira Kurosawa to Mao Zedong’s China. While he always worked in a figurative mode, reality is deftly sublimated to the creation of surrealistic spaces in his paintings.
